What Is An ATS?

"ATS" stands for Applicant Tracking System.

Applicant Tracking Systems accomplish what the name implies - they track the activities that are involved in dealing with any applicant that submits a resume for a specific position, or simply submits a resume, to a Company that utilizes the ATS.

WHY DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HOW AN ATS WORKS?

One of the great features of ATS applications is that they "match" candidates with open positions. This match is done using keywords in the job description, and matching those key words to the resumes submitted by Candidates for the position. What you, as a Candidate, need to know is how this works and how you can use it to your advantage.

As experienced recruiting professionals, we know that every ATS reacts favorably to the key words that are used in KSA’s. By using KSA’s in your Impact Resume, the odds of your resume being excluded by an ATS are reduced and the odds of you getting an interview are improved.

We also know that every ATS reacts favorably to the key words that are used in MSA’s. However, whereas KSA’s talk about you and are typically rich with keywords, MSA’s talk about what you have done. Therefore, while most MSA’s contain fewer keywords those keywords are “action” words that are recognized by the ATS. The result, again, is that the odds of your resume being excluded by an ATS are reduced and the odds of you getting an interview are improved. .
